Spotlight: Scientist Symone’s Venus Wave Makers Project
On September 7, 2021, I held my Venus Wave Makers event for girls interested in ocean science where attendees rotated through five stations to learn more about water pollution, oil spills, sea turtles, the deep sea, and upcycling trash into instruments to prevent marine debris. After rotating through each station, the girls created posters conveying their favorite facts learned while at the event. The hands-on activities and the posters were an artistic, authentic, and affirmative way to build confidence in the girls as the next generation of ocean changemakers. I am so proud to have had this small and mighty group participate in the event. Everyone was so different and I loved every bit of it - the group ranged in age from 3-13 years old, there were girls with braids and beads, girls with two-strand twists, girls with curly hair, girls with straight hair. There were girls who were shy, girls who liked to talk, girls who knew tons of facts about the ocean, and girls who were just excited to be outside.
Through this partnership with Gillette Venus, I also wanted women who I know care about the ocean and conservation to share science their way and to feel confident that their contribution to the field is valued. I made it a priority to ask women who are truly representative of the real world so that the girls would see that there is no one way to be a scientist. I strive to reach back and help my mentees (2 of whom led stations) and peers build their confidence as scientists while also celebrating who they are, in addition to their work. I always feel that it is imperative to bring others along when presented with an opportunity.
Partnering with Gillette Venus has rewarded me with not only engaging with and impacting future conservations, but current ones too. I learned so much from everyone who attended the event and I want to say thank you all for trusting me and supporting me. I couldn’t have done it without you!
